(((INTERVIEW))) LANA DEL REY
(((INTERVIEW))) AZEALIA BANKS

Could Azealia Banks (rap’s unknown descendent) actually be the owner of one of the angriest singles to drop in 2011? Halfway through the carefree housey ‘212’, the song transitions into an angsty shout session: “What you going to do when I premier/Bitch the end of your lives are near”. Her newly recorded music with Paul Epworth will be premiering on her major label debut album sometime soon. As our 2K12’s ‘Most Likely To Pop!’, Banks speaks out on everyone’s obsessions with new toys, women and sex…

Kazemi: : In ‘L8R’, you mention that if someone doesn’t have a dollar, they have “to holler at you at a different time”… Is ‘dollar’ a sexual connotation for oral sex? Or are we supposed to be confused?!

Azealia Banks : It’s just a joke about not wanting to hang around a guy who doesn’t have any money. No confusion… Lol!

Kazemi: Why is sex such a staple theme for female rappers?

Azealia Banks: I think it’s because the type of women who (I feel) are usually attracted to this field are black women, and the sexuality and beauty of black women often goes unmentioned, unconsidered, or even completely denied in terms of mainstream beauty. So, the music is our way of saying, ‘Don’t count us out, because we’re just as sexy/beautiful/smart, if not even more so, than every other type of woman’.

Kazemi: 2012 R&B and Hip-Hop is being birthed via online URL artists A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd… Do you ever see yourself working with one of the two? Do you sense any futuristic change?

Azealia Banks : Sure, if the song is fitting – although I do enjoy working alone. As for sensing any sort of futuristic change, I don’t think there will be any sort of astronomical change, but I do sense that we’ll see a few futuristic artists do their thing…”

Kazemi: In the hook of ‘212’, you put on a geeky Val-girl voice… Was there a specific meaning behind changing your tone as the beat gets more aggressive?

Azealia Banks: The vocal switch is a satirical take on that fake, leach-y, insecure, parasitic personality that is ever-so-synonymous with the people in the entertainment industry.

Kazemi : When you work with producers like Paul Epworth, who have created tons of songs with emotion-based life, do you tend to think of more sentimental/romantic concepts, or does it just push you to rebel more? What is the strongest advantage of your working relationship?

Azealia Banks: No, I make whatever I want to make. Paul and I trust each other’s instincts… he’s a genius. He takes my ideas, pulls them apart, and puts them back together.

Kazemi: Why do you think music fans are so obsessed with innovation and exciting, gothic and foreign-sounding production? Exhaustion, perhaps?

Azealia Banks: No, it’s the same reason everyone’s excited about the new baby in the family, or the new iPhone, or new toys or whatever. People just like new stuff..

Kazemi: How funny was it watching Madonna dance to your song on video?

Azealia Banks: Pretty surreal.
